You have two good options.

Even split. Run the same pace for both halves. It is the simplest plan, and it works for most runners. A systematic review of marathon pacing found steady, even pacing is linked to the best results (Sha et al., 2024).

Why positive splits cost you

A positive split means your second half is slower than your first. It is what happens when you start too fast. And it is the most common way marathons fall apart.

Here is why it hurts so much. When you run faster than goal pace early, you burn through your stored fuel too soon. Later, with the tank low, your pace crashes. Runners who go out 5 to 10% too fast hit the wall between miles 18 and 22 (RunnersConnect, 2024).

The math is cruel. The few seconds you save in the first 10K come back as whole minutes in the last 10K. A fast start never pays off. A steady start almost always does.

The first-10K trap

The first 10K is where good races are lost. Three things make you start too fast:

  1. Adrenaline. You feel fresh and excited. Goal pace feels too easy.
  2. The crowd. Everyone around you is sprinting off the line.
  3. Fresh legs. Early on, fast pace does not hurt yet — so you do not notice the cost.

The fix is to hold back on purpose. Start slower than goal pace for the first 3 to 5 kilometers, then settle in (The Running Channel, 2024). Let the fast starters go. You will pass many of them after mile 20.

A simple trick: pick a pace and refuse to beat it for the first hour. If your watch says you are ahead, slow down. Discipline early is what lets you run strong late.
