Are smartwatch race predictions accurate?

Often they are not, and the error grows as you get fitter. Your watch never measures the air you breathe. It guesses your VO2 max from your heart rate and your pace. Then it maps that guess to a finish time with a fixed rule. One study put a Garmin watch up against a lab test. In mid level runners the gap was small, about 3 to 4 percent. In well trained runners the gap rose near 10 percent, and the watch read low (Engel et al., 2025). So the fitter you get, the more the number can drift. That is the opposite of what a racer wants. What does a wrist VO2 max score really measure?

Why does wrist heart rate make the guess shaky?

Because your watch reads your pulse from your skin, and that read can slip. The watch shines a small light on your wrist. It counts your beats from the blood under the light. That works well when you sit still. But it can drift when you run hard, pump your arms, or sweat. One study tested 50 runners on a treadmill. A chest strap nearly matched a medical heart trace, at a score of 0.98. The wrist watches scored lower, near 0.89 (Pasadyn et al., 2019). Your VO2 max guess sits on top of that pulse. Why does VO2 max get endurance and speed wrong?

Because no single number drives every distance the same way. Race scientists are clear on this point. What predicts a fast mile is not what predicts a strong marathon (Denadai & Greco, 2022). For short races, your top speed matters most. For long races, your steady hard pace matters most. That steady hard pace has a name. It is your lactate threshold, the fastest pace you can hold before you fade. A watch that leans on one VO2 max score cannot split these traits. So it tends to flatter a fast runner over long miles. And it can sell a steady runner short over short ones. Picture two friends, Mia and Jon. Mia has great top speed but a weak steady pace. Jon is the other way around. The watch sees one high score for Mia. It calls for a fast marathon. But Mia fades hard past mile 18. Jon holds his steady pace and beats the watch's call for him. One number fooled it both ways. Does my watch know how race day will slow you down?

No. Your watch cannot see the weather, and weather can move your finish time a lot. Heat is the clearest case. Researchers looked at many years of marathon results next to the weather on race day. As the air warmed, runners slowed down. Even the race winners slowed in the heat (Ely et al., 2008). Slower runners faded the most in the late miles. Now think about how that breaks a watch guess.
