The Boston Marathon qualifying times are set by your age and gender, and you must beat your standard by a few extra minutes to actually get in. The Boston Athletic Association, or BAA, sets these standards. They get slower as you get older. But hitting the standard is only step one. More runners qualify than the race can hold. So you need a buffer on top of the time to earn a spot.

The Boston Marathon qualifying times are the marathon standards you must beat to apply for the race. The BAA sets them by age and gender (BAA, 2026). The table above shows the current times. They cover the 2026 and 2027 races.
The pattern is simple. Younger runners get the hardest times. Older runners get more time. A man ages 18 to 34 must run 2 hours 55 minutes or faster. A man ages 50 to 54 gets 3 hours 20 minutes. Women and non-binary athletes get the same standard as each other in every age group. A woman ages 18 to 34 must run 3 hours 25 minutes.
Two rules matter when you read this table. First, your age group is based on how old you are on race day. It is not your age on the day you run the qualifying race. So if you turn 50 before the next Boston, you can aim for the 50 to 54 standard. Second, the time must be your net time. Net time is also called chip time. It is the clock from when you cross the start mat to when you cross the finish (BAA, 2026).
The race must also be a certified marathon. The full 26.2 mile distance must be measured and approved. Indoor races, virtual races, and treadmill runs do not count. The BAA reviews every time before it accepts you.
Why do you need to run faster than the qualifying time?
You need to run faster than the standard because hitting the time only lets you apply. It does not promise a spot. The Boston Marathon has a limited field. For the 2026 race, the field was set at 30,000 runners (BAA, 2025).
In most years, more people hit their standard than there are spots. So the BAA cannot take everyone. It ranks each runner by how far under their standard they ran. Then it takes the fastest first. It goes down the list until the field is full.
The result is a gap between the posted time and the real time you need. People call this gap the cutoff. The cutoff is the extra speed needed in a high-demand year. It is not a published rule. It is whatever number fills the last open spot. You only learn the cutoff after registration closes.
This is why so many runners are surprised. They train for years. They hit their standard by a few seconds. Then they get an email saying they did not get in. They met the time but missed the cutoff. The standard is the door. The cutoff is the line at the door.

How much faster than the BQ standard do you need to be?
For the most recent race, you needed to be 4 minutes 34 seconds faster than your standard to get in. That was the cutoff for the 2026 Boston Marathon (BAA, 2025). A man ages 18 to 34 needed about 2 hours 50 minutes, not 2 hours 55 minutes, to make the field.

That number moves every year. For the 2025 race, the cutoff was 6 minutes 51 seconds (BAA, 2024). So in one year, the buffer dropped by more than two minutes. The cutoff depends on how many fast runners apply that year. You cannot know it in advance.
Because the cutoff swings, a smart goal is to beat your standard by a clear margin. A buffer of 5 to 7 minutes has covered most recent years. A bigger buffer is safer. If your buffer is only a few seconds, you are gambling on a slow year. If your buffer is several minutes, you control your own fate. Aim to beat the standard, not just touch it.

For the 2026 race, the BAA got 33,249 qualifier applications and accepted 24,362. That left 8,887 runners who ran a qualifying time but did not get a spot (BAA, 2025). Each of them earned the standard. None of them had a big enough buffer.
How do the rolling cutoffs work each year?
The cutoff is set fresh each year during one week of registration. The qualifying window opens more than a year before the race. During that window, you run a certified marathon and beat your standard. Then you wait for registration week.
In that week, every qualified runner sends in an application. The BAA collects them all. It does not accept on a first-come basis. Instead, it ranks each runner by how much time they ran under their standard (BAA, 2025). A runner who beat the standard by 12 minutes ranks above a runner who beat it by 2 minutes.
The BAA then fills the field from the top down. The fastest applicants get in first. When the field is full, the line stops. Whatever margin the last accepted runner had becomes that year's cutoff. The BAA announces it after the week closes. That is why the cutoff is called rolling. It is not fixed in the rules. It rolls to fit the demand each year.
This system rewards depth of training, not luck. The more you beat your standard, the safer you are. A runner with a large buffer is accepted no matter how fast the year is. A runner who just squeaks under the time is at the mercy of everyone else who applied.

Did the Boston qualifying standards get harder?
Yes, the standards got harder for the 2026 race. The BAA made the qualifying times 5 minutes faster for athletes ages 18 to 59 (BAA, 2024). It was the first change to the standards since 2019. Runners ages 60 and older kept their old times.
The BAA made the change because the sport keeps growing. More people qualify each year, and they keep getting faster. The race had to turn away large numbers of runners who hit the old standards. The 5-minute change for the under-60 groups reflects where the demand was highest.
There is one more rule to know for 2027 and later. The BAA now adds time to results from steep downhill courses. A course that drops 1,500 to 2,999 feet gets a 5-minute penalty added to your finish. A course that drops 3,000 to 5,999 feet gets a 10-minute penalty. A course that drops 6,000 feet or more cannot be used to qualify at all (BAA, 2026). The aim is to keep fast downhill times fair against flat-course times.
How do you check if your Boston goal is realistic?
You check by comparing a real projection of your marathon time against your standard plus a buffer. Do not guess. Do not assume a recent half marathon means you can hold that pace for 26.2 miles. The marathon is its own test. The last 6 miles decide most finish times.
Start with your true target. Take your age-group standard from the table. Then add a buffer of 5 to 7 minutes. That sum is the time you should aim for, not the posted standard. For a man ages 40 to 44, the standard is 3 hours 5 minutes. A safe goal is closer to 2 hours 58 minutes.
