Event Readiness is a 0-to-100 score that shows how ready your body is to train today. PIRX builds it from signals your wearable already tracks. It reads how your heart responds at rest. It reads how your recent training has loaded your body. Then it places the result in one of four bands.
The idea behind Event Readiness comes from research on heart rate variability, or HRV. Your heart does not beat like a clock. The gap between each beat shifts a little each time. When you are rested, that gap varies more. When you are worn down, it varies less. Scientists have found that higher HRV values signal better recovery and greater readiness for hard sessions (Granero-Gallegos et al., 2020). Event Readiness builds on that same idea.

What does each Event Readiness band mean?
Each band matches a type of session. Knowing your band makes the training decision clear.
95-100 Race Ready. This is your peak state. You can race. You can run your hardest interval session. You can push right to your limit. A score this high is rare in the middle of a tough training block. It shows up most during a taper or after a full rest week. When you see it, use it.
88-94 Sharpening. You are close to your best. You can run a hard tempo or a full interval set. Your body can take the stress and come back stronger. This is the most productive zone for most runners. Most of your best training sessions should land here.
75-87 Building. This is where runners spend most of their training days. Your body is working. It is not fully rested. You can still run a long easy effort, a moderate tempo, or a shorter interval set. Push too hard here and you slow your recovery. Stay in your zone and you still gain. Think of this as the engine room of your training block.
60-74 Foundational. Your body needs a break. Keep it easy. A short jog or a full rest day is the right call. Pushing hard at this level often costs more than it gains. Recovery is part of training. This band is not a failure. It is feedback.

What signals go into the Event Readiness score?
PIRX reads the data your wearable tracks each day. The key signals come from your resting heart rate and how your heart responds shortly after you wake up. These numbers reflect how your nervous system is doing. A calm, recovered nervous system shows up as a higher score. A stressed or fatigued nervous system shows up as a lower one.
Research supports combining multiple readiness signals for the best result. A 2025 study of experienced cyclists tested athletes who guided their training with daily HRV, resting heart rate, and well-being scores. Those athletes improved more than those who used just one signal alone (Alfonso et al., 2025). Combining signals gives a fuller picture. PIRX does this automatically.
A 2024 narrative review of the evidence also confirmed that HRV is a reliable marker of training status, recovery readiness, and how well the body is adapting to a program (Addleman et al., 2024). You do not need a lab or a specialist to use this. Your watch already collects the data.

Should I do intervals when my readiness is low?
No, and the research backs this up. Hard intervals only build fitness when your body can absorb the stress and adapt. If your system is worn down, a hard session does not help. It slows your recovery and can leave you worse than before.
Researchers reviewed eight randomized trials on endurance athletes. The athletes who adjusted their training intensity based on daily readiness signals improved more than those who followed fixed plans. The difference in effect size between the two groups was clear and significant (Granero-Gallegos et al., 2020).

Here is what that looks like in practice. Say your score reads 64. That is Foundational. Your plan says hard intervals today. The smart move is to jog 20 easy minutes and rest. Come back tomorrow. If your score climbs to 89, run the intervals then. You did not miss the session. You moved it to a day when your body can use it.
What if your score is 78? That is Building. You do not have to rest. But do not push to your limit. A shorter set at a slightly easier pace still adds to your training. It will not drain you the way a full hard session does. Cut two or three repeats. Keep the pace comfortable. Come back fresh the next day.
The session you protect on a low-readiness day is often worth more than the one you forced.
Why does my Projected Time stay the same when readiness drops?
Because Event Readiness and your Projected Time measure two different things. This point matters most. Do not confuse them.
Your Projected Time reflects your structural capacity. It tells you how fast your body is built to run right now. It is the result of weeks of training, not one night of poor sleep. It does not shift because you feel tired today. It moves when your fitness changes in a lasting way.
Event Readiness shows how today compares to your normal state. It answers a different question. Not "how fit am I?" but "what can my body handle right now?"
Think of it like a car. Your engine is your Projected Time. Months of work built that engine. Your fuel for today is Event Readiness. A low fuel reading means you drive more carefully today. It does not shrink the engine.

Which drivers grow in each readiness band?
The five performance drivers, Aerobic Base, Threshold Density, Speed Exposure, Load Consistency, and Running Economy, each need a different kind of session. Event Readiness tells you which sessions you can run today. So it also guides which drivers you can grow.
In the Race Ready and Sharpening bands (88-100), you can run the hard sessions that build Threshold Density and Speed Exposure. Threshold Density grows from time near your hard-steady pace. Speed Exposure grows from short, fast intervals with full rest between them. Both of these are high-cost sessions. They need a ready body to pay off. Running them on low-readiness days is like spending money you do not have.
In the Building band (75-87), Aerobic Base and Running Economy are your targets. Long easy runs and steady moderate miles build both. Move at a relaxed, easy pace. These sessions add up over time.
In the Foundational band (60-74), Load Consistency is the only driver you can protect. You protect it by resting or jogging easy. Skipping one hard session keeps your streak intact. Forcing a hard session on a Foundational day and then needing two rest days to recover hurts Load Consistency more than the easy day would have.

How do I use Event Readiness to plan my week?
Build your hard sessions around your readiness, not a fixed calendar. This is the shift that makes the biggest difference in a training block.
Most runners plan hard days on Tuesday and Thursday by habit. That is fine when readiness cooperates. It breaks down when it does not. A bad sleep on Tuesday night can push your score down to Foundational on Wednesday. Pushing through a hard interval session anyway often leaves you drained. You then limp through the rest of the week trying to recover.
A better approach: check your Event Readiness each morning. If it reads Sharpening or Race Ready, run your hard session. If it reads Building, run a moderate session. If it reads Foundational, rest or jog easy.
You still get the same sessions done. You just do them when your body can make the most of them. A 2025 study of cyclists found that adjusting daily session intensity based on combined readiness signals led to meaningful performance gains over fixed plans (Alfonso et al., 2025). Some weeks your hard day shifts by one or two days. That is the system working. Over a full training block, you get the same sessions. But each one lands on a day when your body is ready to adapt.
