Why are you training hard but not racing faster?

What is the difference between fitness and fatigue?

Why does race-day performance lag behind training?

Race-day performance lags because fatigue is still high when training load is high.

Say you just finished your hardest training block ever. Your Aerobic Base is at a new high. Your Threshold Density is better than it has ever been. Your Speed Exposure is sharp. But you race two days after your last hard session. The race goes badly. You feel flat and slow. Why?

A meta-analysis found that cutting training volume by 41 to 60 percent, while keeping intensity and frequency the same, led to clear gains in race-time performance (Wang et al., 2023). What actually determines race-day output?

Race-day output is your structural capacity minus the fatigue sitting on top of it.

How does reducing load reveal what training built?
