Race equivalency means this: one race you ran shows your fitness, and that fitness points to a fair time at every other distance. Run a 20:00 5K and the same fitness points to about a 41:36 10K, a 1:31 half marathon, and a 3:11 marathon. These are your equivalent times.

A race equivalency is a time at one distance that shows the same fitness as a time at another distance. They are not the same time. They are the same level.
Think of it like a ladder. Each rung is a distance. If you stand on one rung — your 5K, say — race equivalency tells you where you would stand on all the other rungs.
It works because of one steady rule. The longer you run, the slower your pace gets. You cannot hold your 5K speed for a marathon. But that slowdown is not random. It follows a clear pattern that researchers can measure (Drake et al., 2023). A good ladder builds that slowdown in for you. That is why the marathon pace in the table is much slower per kilometer than the 5K pace.
The math is most accurate when the two distances are close. Your 5K predicts your 10K very well. It predicts your marathon less well, because the gap is bigger (RunnersConnect, 2024).

Why a 20:00 5K points to about a 3:11 marathon
Look at the bottom of the ladder. A 20:00 5K is 4:00 per kilometer. The matching marathon is 4:32 per kilometer.
That is 32 seconds slower per kilometer. Over 42.2 kilometers, those seconds add up fast. The result is a marathon of about 3:11.
Why so much slower? The marathon is more than eight times the distance of a 5K. Your body slowly runs low on stored fuel. Your legs tire. So you must start at a pace you can hold to the end — not your short-race speed.
The drop is steady and predictable for most runners. That is what lets one 5K point all the way to a marathon. But "predictable" does not mean "promised." The next section shows why.

Where equivalency breaks down
The ladder is a model. Real bodies do not follow one smooth curve. Here is where the numbers wobble.
Very short distances. A 1500 m or a mile leans on raw speed and power. If you have fast-twitch muscle and good form, you will beat your equivalent. If you are built for endurance, you may fall short. Scaling math has known limits at these extremes (García-Manso et al., 2012).
Very long distances. The marathon and beyond lean on endurance, fueling, and long-run training. A huge study of 2,303 runners found that weekly miles change your marathon time a lot — even between runners with the same 5K speed (Vickers & Vertosick, 2016). If your long runs are short, your real marathon will be slower than the ladder says.
Your own profile. Some runners are speed types. Some are endurance types. The ladder assumes a balanced runner. You are not the average. The further a distance sits from the race you ran, the more your own body bends the number.
So use the ladder as a smart guide, not a promise. The rungs near your race are solid. The rungs far away are goals to train toward.
