Is VO2 max a good predictor of marathon time? No, not among trained runners. Two runners can share the exact same VO2 max and still finish a marathon many minutes apart. Is VO2 max a good predictor of marathon time?

No, it is not, once runners reach a trained level. VO2 max stands for maximal oxygen uptake. It is the most oxygen your body can use per minute of hard effort. A higher number means a bigger engine. What is running economy, and why does it predict marathon time better than VO2 max?

Running economy is how much energy you use to run at a given pace. A runner with good economy burns less fuel at race pace. That means they can hold the pace longer. Does training consistency matter more than VO2 max for marathon performance?

Yes, and it matters a great deal. Load Consistency is how steady your training is from week to week. Big spikes in training raise your injury risk. Sudden drops waste the fitness you built. Either way, your marathon suffers on race day.

Steady training builds more fitness than large bursts followed by rest (Gabbett, 2016). A runner who logs 40 miles a week for 20 steady weeks gains far more.
