A race day strategy checklist is a list of five decisions made before the race starts. Each one has a clear data input. The five levers are your pace target, your fuel plan, your weather and course adjustment, your taper status, and your mental anchor.
Most runners guess at two or three of these. Some skip all five and run by feel. A checklist removes the guesswork. You set each lever from real data before you leave home. Then you run the plan.
The earlier you set each lever, the calmer you will feel at the start line.
How do you set your pace target on race day?
Set your pace target from your Projected Time, not from a wish time. Your Projected Time reflects your real training. It is the number tied to your current fitness, not an optimistic goal.
Your Supported Range shows the spread of likely outcomes. Start from the middle of that range. The fast end is a ceiling, not a starting point.
Then do the math. Divide your goal time in seconds by the total miles. That gives your per-mile pace. For a 4-hour marathon, 14,400 seconds divided by 26.2 miles equals about 9:09 per mile. Run every mile close to that pace. A first half that is 5 to 10 seconds per mile slower gives you room to pick up the pace late.
Research on marathon pacing confirms that even splits and small negative splits link to the best finish times (Sha et al., 2024). How much should you eat and drink during a race?
For a race longer than two hours, aim for 60 to 90 grams of carbohydrate each hour (Jeukendrup, 2014). That range covers most marathons.

For a half marathon under two hours, 30 to 60 grams per hour is enough. For a 5K or 10K, you do not need much fuel during the race at all.
Carbohydrate comes from gels, chews, sports drinks, and real food such as bananas. When you mix glucose and fructose, your gut can process more fuel per hour than with a single carbohydrate source (Jeukendrup, 2014). Many sports gels and drinks use both. Check the label before race day.
Practice this plan in training. Your gut adjusts to fuel taken during hard runs. A fuel strategy that you have never tested is a risk on race day. Use your long runs to find what works. Then stick to it.
Also drink at each station. Aim to drink before you feel thirsty. On hot or humid days, sip more often.
How do you adjust your goal time for heat, hills, or wind?
Start with your base target, which is your Projected Time on a flat course in cool, calm weather. Then shift it for the day you will actually get.
A warm day near 20 to 25 degrees Celsius can add 3 to 5 percent to your finish time. On a 4-hour marathon, that is 7 to 12 minutes. A hilly course costs time on the climbs that the descents do not give back. A strong headwind can push your energy use up by a large amount, and the tailwind on the return does not pay for it in full.

Check the forecast the night before. Set your adjusted pace target before you sleep. Then commit to it.
What does your taper look like in race week?
In race week, your volume should be at its lowest point. The work is done. Now the goal is to let fatigue clear so your fitness shows on race day.
Keep one short, sharp run mid-week. A few strides at goal pace are enough. The rest of your runs should be easy. Do not add fitness in the last 7 days. Any hard effort within a week of the race leaves residual fatigue at the start line.
A 3-week taper done well saved a median of 5 minutes and 32 seconds in a study of more than 158,000 recreational marathon runners (Smyth and Lawlor, 2021). Most runners do not taper long enough. Sleep 8 hours a night. Eat more carbohydrate in the two days before the race. These two habits fill your fuel stores without adding any training stress.

How do you use your Event Readiness score on race morning?
Your Event Readiness score shows how close you are to your fitness ceiling today. A score in the Race Ready band (95 to 100) means your body is primed. A score in the Sharpening band (88 to 94) is also a good sign.
Check the score on race morning. If it is high, trust the plan. If it is lower than expected, do not adjust your goal. Readiness is a signal, not a veto. Your Projected Time is built over months. One low readiness score on race morning does not erase that work.

What should you do in the hour before the start?
The hour before the start is the last setup window. Keep it simple.
Eat your last real meal 2 to 3 hours before the gun. A small carbohydrate snack 30 to 45 minutes out is fine for most runners. Avoid anything new. Race morning is not the time to test a new food.
Start your warmup 20 to 30 minutes before your wave. For shorter races, a harder warmup pays off. A study of trained runners found that a high-intensity warmup before a 5000-meter race improved finish times by an average of 6.4 seconds compared to a light warmup (Alves et al., 2023). For a marathon, a light 5 to 10 minute jog and a few strides at race pace is enough. You do not need to drain your tank before the gun.
Run 4 to 6 strides at race pace. This primes your legs without costing fuel. Then stand still and settle your breath. The warmup is done. Every lever is set.

Runners who go out too fast almost always do it for the same reason. They do not have a firm number to race against. They race the crowd instead. A crowd start is almost always faster than a safe first-mile pace.
Your anchor number is not a cap on your race. It is a floor. If you feel strong at mile 20, you can push. But the plan starts from the number. That keeps the early miles honest and the late miles possible.
