The target slows steadily with age. A good 10K for a man in his 50s is about 48:03. For a woman in her 50s, it is about 57:29. By age 60 and over, a good time is about 52:42 for men and 1:05:16 for women. None of these are elite marks. They are times a steady, well-trained runner can reach with patient work.

The word that matters is good, not best. Good sits well ahead of the crowd but far behind the front. The 10K road world records show how far. The men's record is 26:31 and the women's record is 28:46 (World Athletics, 2025). Good is a personal target, not a podium.
What is the average 10K time?
The average 10K time is near 47 minutes for men and 54 minutes for women. This is Running Level's intermediate standard, which marks the runner who is faster than half the field (Running Level, 2024). The average climbs with age in a clear pattern. Men in their 40s average about 50:26. Men over 60 average about 1:00:11. Women in their 40s average about 58:26, rising to about 1:13:57 by age 60 and over.
The median runner is a fair picture of a typical 10K field. The 10K draws fewer first-timers than the 5K. It asks for more training, so the start line skews toward people who run often. That is why its average is a tougher bar than the 5K average.
Still, the gap between average and good is real. It is the gap between running to finish and training to a plan. The good column in the table above is the better target for anyone who wants to improve. Most healthy runners can close that gap in one to two years of regular work.

Why is the 10K a threshold race, not a sprint?
The 10K is the bridge between 5K speed and half marathon endurance. Most runners finish it in 35 to 60 minutes. At that length, you spend the whole race at or just above your lactate threshold. That is the fastest pace you can hold before fatigue products pile up faster than your body clears them. So your threshold pace is your 10K ceiling.
This is what sets the 10K apart. The 5K is a sharper, faster test that lives near your top-end speed. The half marathon rewards a deep base and patience. The 10K sits in the middle. It rewards the ability to hold a hard, even effort for a long time. Research on trained runners found that blood lactate response was the main predictor of 10K performance (Denadai and Greco, 2022).
A good 10K therefore needs more than a fast finish. It needs a high, durable cruising pace. That is why round-number goals like a sub-50 10K and a sub-40 10K are built on tempo work, not just intervals. You raise the pace you can hold for the full distance, then you hold it.
How much does age slow your 10K?
Age slows your 10K in a slow, steady way at first. Peak endurance performance tends to arrive between ages 25 and 35. After that, running performance falls by about 6 to 7 percent per decade until the late 50s (Lepers et al., 2021). The decline stays fairly linear until age 75 to 80, then it gets steeper.

This explains the table. A good 10K for a man in his 20s, near 41 minutes, becomes about 48 minutes by his 50s. The runner did not slack off. The body changed. The heart pumps a little less blood per beat. Muscles lose some fast fibers. Top aerobic power drops in small steps. All of it is normal.
There is good news inside the same research. Faster runners lose less. The decline among the top runners in each age group was closer to 8 percent per decade, while slower runners lost about 10 percent (Lepers et al., 2021). Consistent training holds the line. So a strong masters runner can stay close to their own ceiling for a long time.

Why do men's and women's good 10K times differ?
Men's and women's good 10K times differ by about 12 to 15 percent across every age group. A good 10K for a man in his 20s is about 41 minutes. For a woman in her 20s, it is about 48 minutes. That gap of around 7 minutes holds steady as both groups age. A good 10K for a man in his 50s is about 48 minutes, and about 57 minutes for a woman in her 50s.
The gap comes from physiology, not effort. On average, men carry more oxygen in their blood and a higher share of muscle mass. That lifts the pace the aerobic engine can sustain. The difference is built in, and it is why a single time chart needs separate columns for each gender.
This is also why a raw clock is a poor way to compare two runners. A 48-minute 10K is a good time for a woman in her 20s and an average one for a man in his 20s. How does your 10K fit between your 5K and your half marathon?
Your 10K sits in a predictable spot between your shorter and longer races. A typical runner races a 10K about 4 to 5 percent slower per mile than their 5K pace. They race a half marathon about 5 to 6 percent slower per mile than their 10K pace. So your three race times line up like rungs on a ladder. Each one is a clue to the others.
This matters when you judge your 10K against the table. If your 10K is far slower than your 5K suggests, your endurance is the gap. You have the speed but not the staying power yet. More steady tempo and long runs will close it. If your 10K is close to your 5K pace but your half marathon falls apart, the opposite is true. Your threshold is strong, but your base is thin. The 10K is the test that tells you which side of your fitness needs the work. Reading all three together is far more useful than any single chart row.
