The average looks slow to many runners. That is because it counts every single finisher. First-timers, charity runners, and people who run and walk all go into the number. The marathon draws huge crowds who are out to finish, not to race. So the average is a low bar. If you train with a plan, you will likely beat it by a wide margin.
This is why the good column is the better goal. The gap between average and good is the gap between finishing and racing. For the marathon, that gap is wider than in any short race. The reason sits in how the marathon breaks a runner down over 26.2 miles.

Why does a good marathon time slow down with age?
A good marathon time slows with age because your body slowly loses top-end power. Your heart pumps a little less blood with each beat. Your muscles lose some of their fastest fibers. But the marathon is kind to age. The drop is slow, and steady miles hold it back for years.

The same study showed how gentle the fade is. Men in their late 50s still hold about 90 percent of their peak running speed.
