How long should your long run be for a sub-4 marathon?
Push your longest run past 30 km before race day. No session counts for more. The long run trains your legs to keep working once fatigue sets in.

How do you fuel for a 4-hour effort?

Yes. A run-walk plan can still beat 4 hours, and it can make the day feel kinder. Short, planned walks do not have to cost you the clock.
Researchers tested non-elite runners who mixed running with brief walks against runners who ran nonstop. Both groups reached the line in about the same time (Hottenrott et al., 2016). The run-walkers also reported less soreness and less tiredness at the end. The walks gave their legs tiny rests along the way.
