A dew point above 65°F, which is 18°C, is the point where running turns genuinely hard. The thermometer does not tell the whole story. Dew point does. It measures how much water hangs in the air. What dew point is bad for running?

A dew point above 65°F, or 18°C, is bad for running. That is where the air starts to feel oppressive to most runners. The National Weather Service sorts dew point into simple comfort bands. Below 55°F, or 13°C, the air is dry and comfortable. Between 55 and 65°F it turns sticky. At or above 65°F there is a lot of water in the air, and it feels oppressive (National Weather Service).

Those bands map cleanly onto running. A dew point under 55°F barely touches your pace. From 55 to 65°F, your easy runs feel fine, but a hard workout starts to bite. Once the dew point crosses 65°F, both easy and hard runs get heavy. Above 75°F, or 24°C, a hard session is not worth the risk.

Here is the key shift in thinking. Stop checking only the temperature. A 70°F day with a 50°F dew point is a fine day to race. A 70°F day with a 70°F dew point is a brutal one. Same temperature. Very different run. The dew point is what splits the two apart.

Why does humidity slow you down?

Humidity slows you down because your sweat cannot evaporate. Sweat does not cool you while it sits on your skin. It cools you only when it lifts off into the air and turns to vapor. That escape needs dry air to move into. When the air is already packed with water, your sweat has nowhere to go.

So the sweat just drips off. It pours down your face and back without cooling you at all. Your core heat keeps building. Your heart rate climbs to push more blood out to the skin. To protect itself, your body forces you to slow down.

Research shows this plainly. In a 2025 study, trained cyclists rode the same time trial in four levels of humidity, all at 33°C. As the air grew more humid, the share of sweat that actually evaporated fell from about half to less than a fifth (Bright et al., 2025). Less evaporation means less cooling. The riders in the most humid air ran out of cooling power and slowed down hard.

This is why a humid day feels so much harder than a dry day at the same temperature. The heat is the same. Your ability to shed it is not. The water in the air is the limiter, and dew point is how you measure that water.

Why is dew point a better number than humidity?

Dew point is better because it stays steady, while relative humidity does not. Relative humidity is a percentage. It rises and falls all day as the temperature changes, even when the actual water in the air never moves (National Weather Service).

A quick example. At 7 a.m. you might see 90 percent humidity at 60°F. By noon the same air at 80°F might read just 50 percent. Nothing about the air changed. Only the temperature did. So the 90 percent reading scared you, and the 50 percent reading fooled you. The percentage moved, but the run did not get easier.

Dew point cuts through that. A dew point of 65°F means the same thing at dawn as it does at noon. It is a fixed measure of the water in the air. And that water is exactly what decides whether your sweat can dry. That is why many coaches tell runners to track the dew point and ignore the humidity percentage (Runners Connect).

Temperature alone has the same blind spot. A warm, dry day and a warm, soaking day read the same on the thermometer. They are not the same run. Dew point is the one number that catches the difference.

How much does a high dew point slow your pace?

A high dew point can slow your pace by 3 to 8 percent or more once it climbs past 65°F. The exact cost grows as the number rises. A small bump near 60°F is barely felt. A jump above 70°F is large. The higher the dew point, the steeper the price.

The cycling study gives a clear picture. The riders in the most humid air took almost 53 minutes to finish a trial that took just over 46 minutes in dry air (Bright et al., 2025). That is close to a 14 percent loss. Their bodies simply could not cool fast enough to hold the pace.

Marathon data shows the same trend. One analysis of thousands of marathon results found that humidity barely matters until the air warms past 65°F, or 18°C. Above that, heat and humidity stack up together. The pair can slow a runner by up to 8 percent, which is more than 15 minutes off a 3-hour goal (Running Writings, 2025).

So the slowdown is real, and it is large. A high dew point is not a small detail. On the wrong day, it can hide weeks of honest training behind a slow clock.

How do you adjust your pace for the dew point?

To adjust for the dew point, run by effort, not by the clock, once it climbs past 65°F. Below that, your normal paces are safe. Above it, your goal pace will cost more than it usually does, so you ease off on purpose. You are not unfit on a sticky day. You are just paying a heat tax.

Use the table as your guide. From 60 to 65°F, add 2 to 3 percent to a hard effort. From 65 to 70°F, add 3 to 5 percent. From 70 to 75°F, add 5 to 8 percent and drop your pace targets. Above 75°F, skip the hard session or move it indoors.

Here is a worked example. Say your 10K goal pace is 8:00 per mile. The dew point reads 62°F. From the table, add 3 percent. That moves your target to about 8:15 per mile. You hold that effort, trust your breathing, and let the splits run slower than usual.

Can you get used to a high dew point?

Yes, your body adapts to humid heat, but it takes steady exposure over a couple of weeks. The first hot, sticky runs of the season always feel the worst. That is not just in your head. Your body has not yet tuned its cooling system to the new air.

Give it time and it learns. You start to sweat sooner and more evenly. Your blood volume rises a little. Your heart rate at a set pace drops back down. These changes build over about 10 to 14 days of running in the heat. After that, the same dew point feels less crushing than it did on day one.
